History and Milestones

The story of the Forster Group is defined by entrepreneurial spirit, innovation, and a constant drive to push boundaries. Since 1904, we have combined Swiss craftsmanship with technological excellence and global collaboration. Every milestone reflects our heritage while laying the foundation for the future.

1904

In 1904, Conrad Forster Willi founded the embroidery company Forster Willi & Co. in St. Gallen. At the time, the city was one of the world's leading centres of embroidery, and embroidery was Switzerland's most important export industry. This remarkable heritage continues to shape the identity of the Forster Group to this day.

1938

In 1938, Forster Willi began working regularly with leading Haute Couture houses in Paris, Milan, and New York, laying the foundation for the close relationships the company continues to maintain with international fashion houses today. The original Couture books from this period are still preserved in the Forster Willi archive.

1944

In 1944, the second generation, led by Willi Forster, carried the family’s embroidery tradition forward while introducing new ideas and innovations. Despite material shortages and challenging market conditions, the Swiss embroidery industry demonstrated remarkable resilience and continued to innovate, laying the groundwork for the post-war revival.

1965

In 1965, the third generation of the Forster family, Peter, Tobias and Ueli Forster, took over the family business. As international competition intensified and new technologies transformed the textile industry, they embraced change and continued to drive innovation. Advances in embroidery technology and growing global demand created new opportunities for specialisation, growth, and international expansion.

1988

In 1988, Forster Willi & Co. AG acquired the Swiss textile company Jacob Rohner AG, which had established a strong reputation for its embroidery products in the lingerie market. The gradual integration of the two companies expanded the product portfolio and brought together the complementary strengths of both businesses.

The merger brought together the strengths of two long-established companies and laid the foundation for the next chapter of the Group’s development. Today, Forster Rohner AG comprises the two business units Forster Willi and Forster Rohner Lingerie.

Today, the Suzhou facility remains a cornerstone of its international manufacturing operations.

2001
