The Embroidery for Lady Diana's Most Expensive Auctioned Evening Gown Comes from St.Gallen

In December, an evening gown worn by Diana, Princess of Wales, was auctioned off in Hollywood for nearly $1.15 million – a record-breaking price for one of her dresses. The fabric for the gown was designed in 1983 by St.Gallen-based textile manufacturer Jakob Schlaepfer. It features Schiffli embroidery in a star pattern, adorned with applied glass stones.

Lady Diana wore the gown, made of black velvet and blue organza, during a 1985 trip to Italy with the current King Charles III and again in 1986 at an opera gala in Vancouver. The auctioned dress epitomized the luxury celebrated in the 1980s and was a creation by Moroccan fashion designer Jacques Azagury.
